Warming Up

Tue 12 Oct 2010 1 comment

I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time.

Actually, I’ve been writing for a long time, informally and in a number of different places — lots of emails, Facebook posts, and rants on electronic bulletin board systems (BBS) that predated the Internet.

The funny thing is that I never thought I had enough to say to warrant a book or a blog.  A book seemed too large a unit of work to take on “just now”, and the whole “self-important” and “I need attention” aspects of blogging turned me off entirely.  I still wouldn’t be surprised if no one but me found any of my thoughts interesting or useful, but I’ve decided to centralize my “output” on a go-forward basis and to try to collect my notable past efforts in one place as I am able.

The other reason that I am more than fashionably late to blogging is that I have been waiting for, then searching for, and more recently building (more on this later) the “perfect” environment to house and enable the product of my intellect, my passions, my memories, my opinions and beliefs, and my more than active imagination.

“Waiting on the perfect” is a strange condition (perhaps unique to humans) in which we’ve all found ourselves for one reason or another at one time or another.  Unable to survive even casual scrutiny, why do we allow ourselves to be paralyzed in this condition for so long?  Much better to make an admittedly imperfect start.

So here at long last is the cacophony of hyperlinked relativity, constantly evolving structure, and amusing (at least to me) background noise that fills my head, filtered to the best of my ability for our mutual edification.  A melange of music, film, language and literature, common sense (seemingly less and less common these days), communication, architecture and design, art and technology, philosophy (ontology and ethics, mostly), religion, politics, tolerance and intolerance, pragmatism, parenting, personal responsibility, rage, and joy from which emerges the occasional pithy observation, startling insight, or real original thought.

Fair warning — most of the topics I explore here (not to mention the way I perceive, charge into, dissect, and synthesize them) will get you un-Friended, not invited back to dinner, emphatically denounced, and/or shunned socially, but this is me being me.  I’ve learned to just go with it since it not only reflects who I really am but how my internal process really works.  No use pretending, there’s no one left to impress, and honestly maintaining a facade is just too much work, so here goes …
